The "We Can Do It!" slogan is one of the most iconic propaganda images of World War II. Artist J. Howard Miller was commissioned to create the poster by Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company to promote women to take on manual labor jobs within defense industries while men were deployed in military positions overseas. Once veterans returned from war, the majority of the women were forced to return to their skilled jobs, often clerical work, although they were perfectly skilled to perform the tasks that men were employed in. Rosie the Riveter became a symbol of women's empowerment and patriotism.
According to The Oxford Dictionary, propaganda is defined as information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view. For the duration of this project, you will have this site along with its links to reference to help gain inspiration for your art project. Your task will be to design a propaganda poster with a subject that is important to you and to design a catchphrase and image that supports said theme.
